A picture popped up on our social media feed, entitled ‘What more do you need?‘ with a frightening post about the HPV vaccine and no less than 82 links of ‘evidence‘ that the vaccine is ‘dangerous‘.
It was an upsetting picture of a car with a bumper sticker saying ‘In memory of Jessie, HPV vaccine kills’ – a parent somewhere is coping with the death of their child and that is hard for any parent to consider. But it doesn’t prove this information is correct. What’s worse is that this could well end up being sent to my tween or teen, who certainly doesn’t yet have the critical thinking skills and experience to evaluate this evidence on their own!
TEXT OF ORIGINAL POST: After Gardasil was licensed and three doses recommended for 11-12 year old girls and teenagers, there were thousands of reports of sudden collapse with unconsciousness within 24 hours, seizures, muscle pain and weakness, disabling fatigue, Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS), facial paralysis, brain inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, blood clots, optic neuritis, multiple sclerosis, strokes, heart and other serious health problems, including death, following receipt of Gardasil vaccine.
Lets start by asking Wikipedia to give us some background on the HPV Vaccine. Just reading a couple of paragraphs will help us view this evidence in a clearer light.
In summary, Wikipedia tells us that HPV vaccines became available to teenagers in 2006, they prevent cancer causing infections and the WHO now recommend vaccination. There are different types of HPV vaccine and this post initially starts out referring to Gardasil. Although the 82 links seem to refer to HPV vaccines in general.
Instantly some questions come to mind: Can all HPV vaccines be equally bad? In the same way? Everywhere in the world? And why has the mainstream press missed the class action lawsuits over the last decade of use?
Lets look at some of those 82 links a little closer. This is a considered post claiming to contain evidence of wrongdoing. If say 6 links support the claim, then maybe there is something here, and this is worth investigating.
1st link in the post – The Japanese government stopped giving the Gardasil vaccine in 2013 after health officials recorded nearly 2,000 adverse reactions, according to the Tokyo Times. http://www.tokyotimes.com/side-effects-in-young-girls-take…/
The first link to the Tokyo Times (which is not a newspaper) was broken, but we found the article after a quick search. The only evidence it provides is a link to a hard right website, full of the usual Hillary Clinton conspiracy theories, etc.
Luckily, I was also able to find this in the Lancet…
“On June 14, 2013, 2 months after formal inclusion in Japan’s national immunisation programme, proactive recommendations for the HPV vaccine were suspended following reports of adverse events since found to be unrelated to vaccination, but which were extensively covered in the media.”
And it states: “predicted to result in an additional 24 600–27 300 cases and 5000–5700 deaths over the lifetime of cohorts born between 1994 and 2007”. That’s deaths from not taking the vaccine because of fake scare stories.
2nd link in the post – There is the MIT and Stanford educated medical doctor who also has a Master’s Degree in Public Health? The one who is a vaccine developer and has worked for Merck, the manufacturers of the Gardasil vaccine? Dr. Harper has repeatedly spoken out against the HPV vaccine and raised serious concerns about whether it is safe. As reported by CBS News in 2009: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/gardasil-researcher-speaks-out/
This link just repeats, unproven claims and links to the same hard right website above.
That’s not a great start, the first 2 links go to the same location. I would expect the top 3 links to be the strongest evidence they have.
How many links am I expected to click on? The answer is ‘none’. I am just expected to believe the post because it has been sent to me by a friend.
3rd link in the post – The thousands of parents who belong to this non-profit, the parents who followed their doctor’s orders and got the “cervical cancer jab,” as they like to call it in the U.K. http://sanevax.org/uk-association-of-hpv-vaccine-injured-d…/
This link takes us to a website that appears to be asking us to donate money. This isn’t evidence, it is neither a journal nor a news article explaining research.
4th link in the post – Dr. Russell Blaylock – (medical doctor and board certified neurosurgeon) explains the complete scientific fraud of the HPV Gardasil cervical cancer vaccine – http://bit.ly/1V9DHa9
Dr Blaylock is a retired doctor, who now sells supplements. His Wikipedia page states he “suggested that health-care reform efforts under President Obama were masterminded by extra-governmental groups that wish to impose euthanasia“. We have come across some of his claims before when researching other posts such as ‘artificial sweeteners are the cause of multiple illnesses‘, for which there is no evidence.
7th link in the post – Video of teen girl struck down by Gardasil cervical cancer vaccine poison – http://bit.ly/1CpDd7g
The video of the ‘teen girl’ is upsetting and the description states she was ‘struck down’, but it is not evidence. This is a partially clad teenage girl crying for half an hour. Almost all kids have a similarly disabling syndrome that is triggered by the mere suggestion of; tiding their room, loading a dishwasher or hanging out laundry. We don’t see the child receive the vaccination or swelling of the vaccination site. There is no apparent evidence to link cause and effect.
6th link in the post – Teen boy dies immediately after HPV cervical cancer vaccine – http://bit.ly/29A7jY6
And finally, the boy who ‘died’, died of myocarditis, not the vaccine, according to the autopsy.
After 6 links we have identified that this ‘evidence’ contains broken links and does not all link to research reports or even news stories from reputable news agencies. Some of it links to known ‘salesmen’ and one is a video of a child crying.
There is nothing identifying which HPV vaccines (There’s more than one) were supposedly used, documenting side effects in each individual case. This is enough to show that our ‘friend’ hasn’t read this before re-posting and we can make the informed decision to stop digging. If there is evidence that all HPV vaccines are ‘bad’, we aren’t going to find it in this confused mess.
Let’s review the steps we took:
- A quick look at Wikipedia to familiarise ourselves with the HPV vaccine, so we know what kind of evidence we are looking for. This revealed that we should find information pertaining to several vaccines and documented evidence of similar side effects for each vaccine.
- Start by taking just a few links from the post and see where they lead. A few random chosen link checks will reveal enough to decide on the quality of this post as evidence.
- There is another step we took to confirm to ourselves that we were on the right track. There is a Cochrane review of the HPV vaccine(s), in summary it works and is safe. A Cochrane review is the gold standard in medical research.
It is important to point out here that we are not saying the HPV vaccine is entirely safe. We have found evidence in the form of a Cochrane review that says the vaccine is safe.
We have not found evidence to prove the claim that the HPV vaccine is unsafe, made by the original poster in this mess of links.
In response to the original poster’s question, ‘What more do you need?‘, we answered EVIDENCE!
The Cochrane review is the clincher here. Medical research is difficult to read and evaluate. It’s aimed at medical professionals trained to understand the data and results. Whenever we see medical research being shared, we always check for a Cochrane review. They are the best way to get a summary of the evidence in a medical field.
We try to provide the original text as best we can and links from the post here so that this debunk will be available in search results when people ‘search for phrases within the text’. We are unable to use original images so that this debunk will not be available when ‘reverse image searches’ are used.
